A lunchtime appointment in urban Kuala Lumpur becomes an exploration of love and weight loss.
A married woman tries to deal with her husband's infidelity and forbidden feelings for a neighbour's teenage son. The misfortune of a tacky game show's contestant has the reader pondering the increasingly gladiatorial nature of modern entertainment.
At a swanky teatime venue, a bunch of uptown women try to hide their secrets beneath blissful exteriors. A timid teacher finds the courage to change her life, and a parent's worst nightmare comes true in a busy shopping mall.
MOTEL GRAND 1
NTRUM 2 km
Outside Kuala Lumpur, a woman visits Amritsar to learn more about her snake-worshipping ancestors. Further back in time, a young man has to choose his loyalties in a dilemma of race and survival during the Japanese Occupation.
These stories are the product of a series of creative writing workshops organised by the British Council of Malaysia as part of its Creative Cities programme, in collaboration with t UK-based writer development organisation Spread the Word. From these workshops and online mentoring, a diversity of voices, stories and perspectives has emerged, all inspired by the energy of Kuala Lumpur.
